When you plan your restaurant or bar branding through its furniture's look and feel, you bring many elements together to give your customers a unique experience. When people choose your restaurant or bar, they will know what to expect based on how it looks.

In this post, we will focus on the bar stools for your venue, specifically the height of the bar stools. Whether you plan to open a new bar/bar area or you plan to redesign your current bar, these tips will help you create the ambiance you intend.

Bar Stool Types Available in Different Heights

Before deciding the right height, let’s start with the options for stools. Your options include:

  • Counter height - These stools measure 23 to 28 inches from the top of the seat to the floor. Use a seat width of about 15 inches to go with this height.
  • Bar height - These stools measure 29 to 32 inches from the top of the seat to the floor. Use a seat width of about 17 inches to go with this height.
  • Extra-Tall height - These stools measure 33 to 36 inches from the top of the seat to the floor. Use a seat width of about 21 inches to go with this height.

Measuring Your Bar Stool to Fit

The stool you select will have to pair with the surface - whether table or counter - where people will set their drinks. A good rule to stick with leaves at least 12 inches between the top of the stool and the bottom of the table or countertop. Make sure to consider anything that will hang down over the tables or the bar.

  • Counter height - These lower stools pair with a surface from 35 to 37 inches.
  • Bar height - These mid-sized stools pair with a surface from 41 to 43 inches.
  • Extra-Tall height - These large stools pair with a surface from 44 to 47 inches.
